Coyotes scare Tigers, shock Shockers

ASU Tournament

TEMPE, Ariz.—South Dakota put a scare into 17th-ranked Missouri and knocked off previously unbeaten Wichita State Friday on the opening day of the Littlewood Classic hosted by Arizona State University. Missouri won the opener 11-7 and South Dakota rebounded to beat Wichita State 3-2.

The Coyotes (2-5) led Missouri, an NCAA Super Regional team a year ago, 4-3 thru four innings. Shelby Keil and Emily Winckler drew bases-loaded walks and Kayla Fields followed with a two-run single in the third inning to give USD its first lead. South Dakota chased Missouri starter Cheynee Baxter after just 2 1/3 innings.

The Tigers (5-1) responded with back-to-back, two-out home runs in the fifth. Shortstop Braxton Burnside's two-run shot put Missouri back in front 5-4. Center fielder Anna Reed followed suit with a solo shot to left that made it 6-4. It was the first home runs of the season for both players.

Missouri scored five runs on five hits in the seventh to push the lead to 11-4. Burnside provided a two-run double in the inning. She finished 2-for-3 with five RBIs.

South Dakota strung together seven hits in its final at bat, and had the tying run at the plate with two outs. But Missouri pitcher Danielle Baumgartner got pinch hitter Erica Limon to ground out to second to end the game. It was the second time the Coyotes left the bases loaded and the fourth inning in which a runner was stranded on third base.

Game two Friday was also against a 2016 NCAA Tournament team in the Shockers. South Dakota freshman Ally Wiegand went the distance in the circle to earn her second win of the season. She allowed just three hits and one earned run while striking out a season-best eight hitters.

Coyote junior Emily Winckler hit her first collegiate home run, a two-run blast over the wall in center that broke a scoreless tie in the fourth. Winckler had two hits on the day with three RBIs and two runs scored.

Wichita State (4-1) got one run back with a solo homer from shortstop Laurie Derrico in the bottom of the fifth. A two-out error allowed the tying run to score in the sixth.

Fields reached on an error to start the top of the seventh for South Dakota. She was replaced by pinch runner Lauren Slater, who came around to score the go-ahead run on a two-out double to left centerfield by Jamie Holscher. It was Holscher's fourth hit of the day and her first RBI of the season.

Wiegand struck out the first two hitters of a 1-2-3 seventh to finish the game. Both of her wins this season have come against NCAA Tournament teams. She has 19 strikeouts against three walks in 28 innings of work.

South Dakota right fielder Morgan Vasa was 4-for-7 Friday with three runs scored. Left fielder Camille Fowler was 2-for-4 against Wichita State and had two outfield assists against Missouri. Catcher Jessica Rogers was 3-for-7 on the day and threw out a runner trying to steal in the first inning against Wichita State.

A rematch against Wichita State at 10 a.m. (CT) starts Saturday's slate of games. The Coyotes will face Illinois State in their second game at approximately 12:45 p.m. (CT).
