Coyotes finish 3-2 at Santa Clara

SANTA CLARA, Calif.—Lexi Watts and Kayla Wedl had three hits and two RBIs apiece in leading Illinois-Chicago to a 10-2, five-inning win against South Dakota Sunday on the final day of a tournament hosted by Santa Clara University.
 
The Flames (9-5) out-hit the Coyotes 10-3 in avenging Friday's 1-0 loss to South Dakota. USD finished the tournament with a 3-2 record.
 
The Coyotes (5-7) scored both their runs in the second to knot the game at 2-2. Shelby Keil walked and scored on a double by Kayla Fields. Taylor Steinfeldt plated Fields with a base hit to left center later in the inning. Illinois-Chicago regained the lead with three runs in the bottom of the second. The Flames added four more in the third and Watts' RBI single scored the winning run in the fifth.
 
Elaine Heflin (5-1) pitched all five innings for the Flames. She retired the side in order in the first, fourth and fifth innings.
 
Keil was 9-for-15 with three doubles, three RBIs and seven runs scored in five games at the tournament. She leads the Summit League with a .455 average (15-for-33) this season. Emily Winckler was 6-for-11 (.545) in Santa Clara with four runs scored. Steinfeldt was 7-for-13 (.538) with a home run, a double and five RBIs.
 
South Dakota heads to Florida next weekend for five games at the Hatter Classic hosted by Stetson. The Coyotes are slated to face Cornell, Stetson, LIU Brooklyn and Bethune-Cookman.
