SB: Husky Classic

SEATTLE—South Dakota softball wrapped up play at the Husky Classic by falling to No. 8 Washington 8-0 late Saturday and dropping an 8-0 decision to No. 7 Minnesota Sunday morning. The Coyotes' scheduled game against Seattle Saturday afternoon was cancelled due to rain.

South Dakota mustered three hits against Washington Saturday and one hit against the Gophers on Sunday. Washington starter Madi Schreyer (5-2) struck out three to earn the win for the Huskies. Minnesota's Carlie Brandt (5-0) allowed a single to Jamie Holscher in the top of the first inning and nothing else to stay unbeaten in 2017.

Washington (20-3) got a solo home run from Morganne Flores in the first and a two-run shot by Kirstyn Thomas during a four-run third inning. Both hitters finished 2-for-3 in the game. The Huskies scored the winning run in the bottom of the fifth on a throwing error.

Sydney Dwyer's three-run home run capped a six-run first inning for Minnesota (21-1). The Gophers scored twice more in the third on a solo shot by Sara Groenewegen and an RBI single by Danielle Parlich. Minnesota had 10 hits in its four turns to bat. Sam Macken was 2-for-3 with a run scored.

South Dakota (7-14) has one more tournament before starting Summit League play on March 25. The Coyotes will take on Northern Illinois, Creighton (twice) and Iowa at a two-day event in Iowa City, Iowa, that starts Friday.
