Iowa wins pitchers' dual 1-0

SB: Iowa 1, USD 0

IOWA CITY, Iowa—A bunt single by Iowa left fielder Alex Rath, a steal of second, and a base hit by shortstop Lea Thompson produced the only run in the Hawkeyes' 1-0 win against South Dakota Monday at Pearl Softball Field.

Iowa senior pitcher Shayla Starkenburg and South Dakota freshman pitcher Ally Wiegand both allowed three singles, struck out seven and walked one in their complete-game efforts. The Coyotes were 0-for-4 against Starkenburg with runners in scoring position. Wiegand retired the side in order in four of her six innings of work.

Thompson had two of Iowa's three hits. Her RBI single came in the third inning. The Hawkeyes (6-17) loaded the bases later in the third, but Wiegand struck out Allie Wood to end the frame.

Camille Fowler, Emily Winckler and Jamie Holscher each had hits for South Dakota (9-17). The Coyotes had a runner on second in the second, third and fourth innings, but couldn't capitalize. Starkenburg retired 11 of the final 12 batters she faced with a hit batsman her only blemish.

South Dakota went 2-3 in a four-day span in Iowa City. Wiegand (5-5) started three of the five games, logging 22 innings in all in her first extensive action back from injury. She allowed five earned runs and had 24 strikeouts against two walks during the tournament.

USD begins Summit League play next weekend against Western Illinois in Macomb, Ill.
