MACOMB, Ill.—Western Illinois rallied for six runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to shock South Dakota 9-8 in the rubber match of a three-game series Sunday at Mary Ellen McKee Stadium. It marks the first time in six years as Summit League foes that the Leathernecks have won their regular season series with the Coyotes.
South Dakota scored six runs in the top of the second inning to knock out Leatherneck starter Emily Ita, the Summit's leader in ERA.
Jessica Rogers homered for the second time in as many days to give USD a 2-0 lead.
Camille Fowler followed with a two-run triple to make it 4-0.
Emily Winckler hit a solo shot later in the inning to make it 6-0.
Brooke Stulga, yesterday's game two starter, replaced Ira in the circle and in the leadoff spot of Western Illinois' batting order and played a key role in the comeback. Stulga was tagged for eight runs in less than three innings of work Saturday, but allowed one earned run in 5 1/3 innings of relief Sunday. She also led off the seventh inning with a solo home run, her first of the season, to close the gap to 8-4.
After Stulga's home run, pinch hitter Meghan Henson walked and Kelsey Marlow popped out to third for the first, and what would be the only out recorded in the inning. The Leathernecks closed the game with six consecutive singles to walk off with the win. Payton Abbott, who had three hits for WIU, had a two-run single that made it 8-7. Rachel Beatty tied it with a base hit to right. Pinch hitter Sydney Hollings won it with an infield single that scored Abbott from third.
Coyote freshman pitcher
Ally Wiegand had a one-hitter thru four innings, but ran into trouble in the fifth. Abbott and Beatty began the inning with back-to-back homers and Western Illinois added a third run in the frame. Wiegand struck out Hailey Duwa with two on to get out of the sixth unscathed, but ran out of gas in the seventh.
Fowler was 2-for-4 for the Yotes with a double, the triple and three RBIs. She had six hits during the series, scored four times and had five RBIs. Winckler and Rogers finished with two hits apiece Sunday and Winckler extended her hitting streak to eight games.
In the three-game series, the two teams combined for 49 runs on 64 hits and smacked 15 home runs.
South Dakota returns to Vermillion and will play in its home opener Saturday against South Dakota State.
