SIOUX FALLS, S.D.–Omaha forward Mikaela Shaw scored 25 points to lead the Mavericks to a 64-58 upset of South Dakota in the quarterfinal of the Summit League Tournament inside the Denny Sanford PREMIER Center on Sunday afternoon.
It's the first time in five years that South Dakota (22-8) will not compete in the Summit League Tournament final. Omaha (16-14) has upset the higher seed in the quarterfinals for the second consecutive season.
Senior center
Abigail Fogg led the Coyotes with her third career double-double. Fogg scored all 16 of her points in the second half, going 8-of-9 from the field. She also grabbed 10 rebounds, dished out a career high five assists and swatted four blocks. Joining her in double-figures was freshman guard
Ciara Duffy with 13 points. Senior forward
Bridget Arens chipped in eight points and five boards on 4-of-5 shooting.
Shaw shot 56.3 percent (9-for-16) from the floor and 7-of-9 from the free-throw line. She added six rebounds and four assists. Guard Remy Davenport made four threes and three free-throws for 15 points.
It was a back-and-forth contest with 16 lead changes. South Dakota used an 8-2 run at the end of the second quarter to take a five-point lead at the halftime break. It was also USD's largest lead.
Omaha forward Michaela Dapprich made her only two threes of the game after the break to retake the lead 31-30. Another pair of Omaha threes by Davenport with 3:04 to go in the third quarter opened the Maverick lead to eight points.
Fogg scored six points in the first four minutes of the fourth quarter. Her offensive put-back with 6:07 to play gave the Coyotes the advantage at 50-49. Shaw answered with seven points in the next two minutes to give Omaha a four-point lead.
The game was tied up again at 56 with 1:42 on the clock after a pair of layups by Fogg and sophomore guard
Allison Arens. The Mavericks' answer was a go-ahead 3-pointer by Davenport with just over a minute to play. Omaha made five free throws in the remaining time to seal the 64-58 win.
South Dakota shot a season-low 14.3 percent (4-of-28) from beyond the arc. Overall, both the Coyotes and the Mavericks shot 39 percent from the floor.
USD head coach Dawn Plitzuweit opening statement...
These two seniors to my right played very, very well. I'm proud of what they accomplished throughout the course of this season and certainly what they did today. Disappointed that they have to go out on a loss, but at the same time, Omaha played really well. Their best players played good basketball, got to the free-throw line and got some good shots. From this, we hope that we have an opportunity to continue playing. I believe that our players have worked really hard. I believe that they have earned the right to continue playing. We will just have to wait and see right now.
Senior forward Bridget Arens on Mikaela Shaw...
She's a great player and she's having a great career for Omaha. She's a player that hard to stop on the drive when she gets going. I don't think we necessarily did our best on her, but I have to give her credit, she's a great player and an even better person.
Arens on whether the team is ready to make another postseason run...
I would say every girl on the team is not ready to be done by any means. All year long, we have had a great group of younger players who are very hungry, so I think if any of us get the opportunity, I think we're going to hold onto it for as long as we can. Those younger players really had a great year, and it was fun to be a leader for them. Their work ethic, along with everything else they are about, is going to take them great places.
Plitzuweit on Omaha playing more man defense than before...
I don't know if it necessarily had an effect, I thought we got some really good looks. I thought our players attacked and we got some good shots off. We just seemed rush in taking them, but not necessarily because they were flying at us. We just missed a lot of a shots that, the rhythm was a little bit different than zone from man, but I thought our team did a good job taking care of the basketball. We got a lot of good looks the majority of the game. Unfortunately for us, in this game, they didn't fall for us.
Plitzuweit on the play of Shaw...
It's the same thing that they have done the two other times that we played against them. The first time, we didn't do a good job in the first half, but did a much better job in the second half. The second game we played, we did a better job containing her penetration and in this game we did not, for whatever reason. I don't know if Mikaela Shaw was just a little bit more persistent, or we weren't quite as aware, or if we had some bad matchups on her, but their best player was their best player tonight.
Plitzuweit on the season...
We told our team that it's unfortunate and it's not how we wanted to finish. But our players have battled and found a way to win 22 games despite having a combined five starts entering our first game of the season at the Pentagon. Bridget had four starts in her career and Abigail had started one while she was at American before she transferred. So the fact that this group of young ladies has figured out how to be successful in a lot of different situations is something really to be proud of.
