Coyote trio earn all-Valley honors

2018 all-Missouri Valley Football Conference Team (.pdf)

ST. LOUIS—South Dakota junior defensive end Darin Greenfield, junior wide receiver Dakarai Allen and senior safety Andrew Gray represent the Coyotes on the all-Missouri Valley Football Conference Team announced Monday by the league office and voted on by league coaches, sports information directors, and media members.

Greenfield (Sheldon, Iowa) is a first-team honoree for the second year in a row and is on the ballot for national defensive player of the year. He finished second in the Valley with 14.5 tackles-for-loss during the regular season with a team-high 6.0 sacks. He totaled 55 tackles, forced two turnovers and led the team with 13 quarterback hurries.

Gray (New Lenox, Illinois) is a second-team honoree for the second year in a row and was on the watch list for the Buck Buchanan Award. He started 32 consecutive games to conclude a four-year career at USD. This season, he tied for the team lead with two interceptions and was the Coyotes' third-leading tackler with 76 stops.

Allen (Largo, Florida) is the second Coyote receiver to earn all-MVFC honors, joining Will Powell in 2012. Allen led the Coyotes with 48 catches for 703 yards and five touchdowns. He finished sixth in the league in both receiving yards and catches. Allen was USD's leading receiver in five straight games in the middle of the season and had at least 90 yards three times.

In addition to that trio, a second USD trio earned honorable mention: junior quarterback Austin Simmons (Council Bluffs, Iowa), senior offensive linemen Cody Jennings (Kismet, Kansas) and sophomore offensive lineman Mason Scheidegger (Fonda, Iowa).

Simmons led the Valley and ranked fourth nationally with 3,124 yards passing, the second-most yards in a season in program history. Jennings started every game at right tackle while Scheidegger started all 11 games at left guard. They helped pave the way for the top passing offense in the league at 285 yards per game, good for 14th nationally.
