VERMILLION, S.D.—South Dakota defensive end
Darin Greenfield has earned All-America honors for the second consecutive season. The junior from Sheldon, Iowa, is one of four defensive lineman on the 2018 Walter Camp FCS All-America Team announced recently. Greenfield is one of three players from the Missouri Valley Football Conference named to the team, joining North Dakota State's duo of offensive lineman Zack Johnson and safety Robbie Grimsley.
The team was selected by the head coaches and sports information directors of the FCS. In all, players from 10 different conferences and 23 institutions are represented on the 27-player team.
Greenfield was a first-team all-MVFC choice for the second year in a row and placed 20
th in the voting for FCS defensive player of the year. He finished second in the Valley with 14.5 tackles-for-loss during the regular season with a team-high 6.0 sacks. He totaled 58 tackles, forced two turnovers and led the Coyotes with 13 quarterback hurries. Greenfield was also credited with six pass breakups.
In three seasons at USD, Greenfield has totaled 141 tackles with 19 sacks and 41 tackles-for-loss. He has the fourth-most sacks in program history and ranks sixth in tackles-for-loss.
Walter Camp, "The Father of American football," first selected an All-America team in 1889. Camp – a former Yale University athlete and football coach – is also credited with developing play from scrimmage, set plays, the numerical assessment of goals and tries and the restriction of play to 11 men per side. The Walter Camp Football Foundation – a New Haven-based all-volunteer group – was founded in 1967 to perpetuate the ideals of Camp and to continue the tradition of selecting annually an All-America team.
