TUCSON, Ariz.—South Dakota fell behind early and dropped two games on the final day of Arizona's Wildcat Classic Sunday. The Coyotes dropped a 6-3 decision to Wisconsin before falling to San Diego 4-1 in the nightcap.
South Dakota (8-18) finished 2-3 at the three-day tournament with both wins coming Saturday against 24
th-ranked USC Upstate and San Diego. Junior second baseman
Alyssa Fernandez was 6-for-15 (.400) at the tournament with a double and four runs scored. Senior
Emily Winckler and junior
Jessica Rogers added five hits apiece. Winckler and freshman
Lauren Eamiguel both finished with four RBIs.
Wisconsin 6, South Dakota 3
Brooke Wyderski had a two-run double in the first inning and Kelly Welsh made it 4-0 in the second with her first home run of the season in leading Wisconsin to the win in game one Sunday. The runs were plenty for pitcher Haley Hestekin who allowed one earned run and struck out three in her complete-game effort. Third baseman Taylor Johnson was 3-for-3 for the Badgers with an RBI and a run scored.
Fernandez doubled and scored on a base hit by
Taylor Steinfeldt to cut Wisconsin's lead to 4-1 in the fourth.
Christy Warnock doubled and scored in the seventh.
Jamie Holscher drove in Warnock later in the inning to make it 6-3 before Hestekin got the final two outs.
Steinfeldt was 2-for-3 against the Badgers while Fernandez and Winckler were both 2-for-4.
San Diego 4, South Dakota 1
San Diego scored all four of its runs in the first inning and Hannah Boos limited the Coyotes to two hits in helping the Toreros avenge Saturday's loss to South Dakota.
Boos (4-2) allowed a run in the top of the first, and then retired 18 of 19 batters over the final six innings. She retired 12 in a row before hitting
Camille Fowler with a pitch with two outs in the fifth. Boos closed the game with seven consecutive outs. She struck out seven and walked two.
Fowler singled and scored on a base hit by Fernandez to stoke South Dakota to a 1-0 lead. Shelbi Evans capped a four-run first inning for San Diego with a two-run home run, her first of the season.
What's Next: South Dakota will play five games at a three-day tournament hosted by Memphis starting Friday.
