PHOENIX, Ariz.—South Dakota pitcher
Dustie Durham drove in the only run of the game in the bottom of the sixth inning and completed a five-hit shutout in the circle in leading the Coyotes to a 1-0 win against UNLV in the opening game of the Grand Canyon Classic.
It was the second consecutive win for South Dakota (4-13), which avenged a 6-2 loss to UNLV in Las Vegas two weeks ago. Durham (4-4) has accounted for all four USD victories this season. She logged the program's first shutout in 26 games dating back to last season.
Taylor Steinfeldt,
Jamie Holscher and
Lauren Eamiguel all singled to load the bases for Durham in the sixth. Durham's two-out infield hit off Charlie Masterson scored
Camille Fowler from third. Four of USD's six hits off Masterson came in the sixth.
UNLV (11-5) did not have a runner reach second until the fourth inning and never touched third. The Rebels were 0-for-4 with a runner on second. Alyssa Navarro's two-out double in the top of the seventh was the Rebels' only extra-base hit. Durham caught Reina Bondi's line drive one batter later to secure the win.
South Dakota was flawless in the field for the first time this season. Durham struck out two and walked one. She was 1-for-3 at the plate and has hit safely in five consecutive games.
The Coyotes return to the field at 3 p.m. (CT) Friday to face Grand Canyon.
