VERMILLION, S.D.—Logan Black hit a two-run home run in her first collegiate at bat and pitched four strong innings in leading Creighton to a 6-3 win against South Dakota Wednesday at Nygaard Field.
The Bluejays (17-12) topped the Coyotes (14-28) for the second time in as many weeks after going 0-4 against USD a year ago. Black allowed two runs on seven hits in four innings of work before giving way to Kiele Miller with one on in the fifth. Miller got seven of the final nine outs via the strikeout.
South Dakota loaded the bases with no outs in the first, but came up empty. They were loaded again in the third when
Breanna Alvarez grounded into a double play, but scored
Taylor Steinfeldt from third to cut Creighton's lead to 6-1.
Jamie Holscher followed with an RBI double that made it 6-2.
The Coyotes loaded them a third time with nobody out in the seventh. Miller quickly got two strikeouts, but walked
Lauren Eamiguel to make it 6-3.
Christy Warnock, who had two hits in the game, hit a sharp line drive but directly to Ashley Cantu in right field for the final out.
South Dakota used four pitchers including
Alexis Devers and
Gill Woodward who combined to get the final 10 outs without allowing a run and permitting just two hits.
Dustie Durham started and took the loss after exiting with two on in the third.
USD center fielder
Camille Fowler had three hits for the sixth time this season. It was her team-leading 11
th multi-hit game of the season. Coyote second baseman
Alyssa Fernandez was on base twice in four at bats. She has reached base safely in her last nine games.
The Coyotes resume Summit League play Friday with a doubleheader at Fort Wayne scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. EDT. Game three is set for 11 a.m. EDT Saturday.
