MADEIRA BEACH, Fla.—Central Arkansas junior pitcher Kailla Searcy made the most of her first start of 2019, holding South Dakota's potent offense to a season-low one run on seven hits in leading the Bears to a 9-1 win Sunday morning on the final day of the Madeira Beach Invitational at R.O.C. Park.
Searcy struck out three and was threatened just once. South Dakota loaded the bases in the fourth inning with a run already in and just one out, but Searcy struck out pinch hitter
Jadyn DeWitte and induced a ground ball from
Ashtyn Blakeman to end the threat and preserve a 5-1 lead.
The Bears (6-4) built their lead with a four-run second inning. Leadoff Kayla Crutchmer, who singled and scored in the first, delivered a two-run double in the second and scored again later in the inning on a two-run single from Libb Morris. Central Arkansas outhit South Dakota 11-7.
Jamie Holscher and
Lauren Wobken had two hits each for USD (7-3).
Dustie Durham singled and scored on Wobken's hit in the fourth. Durham has hit safely in all 10 games this season.
Blakeman was 0-for-2 Sunday, ending a career-long nine-game hitting streak to begin the season. She was 11-for-27 (.407) during the streak with four RBIs and seven runs scored.
Durham was 10-for-18 (.556) with a double and two home runs in five games in Florida. She upped her average to a team-best .528. Holscher finished the weekend 7-for-18 (.389) with two doubles, three homers and 11 RBIs. She has reached base in all 10 games this season.
South Dakota returns to Madeira Beach next weekend for five more games. Albany (1:30 p.m. ET) and Cornell (6:30 p.m. ET) are up first Friday. Purdue, a rematch with Drexel, and Middle Tennessee State are also on the docket.
