Mick Garry to be special contributor to GoYotes.com

VERMILLION, S.D.—The University of South Dakota athletic department has partnered with veteran sportswriter Mick Garry to provide more of the features Coyote fans have grown to love and appreciate from his long tenure with Argus Leader newspaper in Sioux Falls.

Garry will serve as a special contributor to South Dakota's athletics website, www.GoYotes.com, for the rest of the spring semester, covering basketball's run through the postseason, spring football and DakotaDome renovations among other things. Fans can expect to read several articles from Garry each week. His first article is set to debut Saturday.

"There is no better talent who can tell the many stories of our coaches and student-athletes than Mick Garry," said Bryan Boettcher, USD assistant AD for sports information. "Mick has been driving back and forth from Sioux Falls to Vermillion and writing about the Yotes for more than 20 years. Our fans know him, appreciate him and want to hear more from him. We are more than happy to continue the relationship."

Garry began at Argus Leader in 1990 and served as its beat writer for USD athletics since 1995. His coverage included features, game stories and columns. He has been named South Dakota Sportswriter of the Year and was a finalist for the award again in 2018. He was the Ed Kolpack award winner for his coverage of North Central Conference athletics, and has been recognized by the Associated Press and South Dakota News Association for his profiles, in-depth coverage of issues and columns.

"Writing about USD and its coaches and athletes has been an extremely rewarding part of my time in the newspaper business," said Garry. "It's pretty cool that now I don't have to give that up. I appreciate the opportunity the athletic department is giving me to stay involved in college sports, especially given that it's in Vermillion where I've made so many friends over the years."

Garry was born in Carroll, Iowa, and grew up in Austin, Minnesota. He graduated from University of St. Thomas in 1988 with a degree in journalism. He worked at Crookston Daily Times, Austin Daily Herald, and StarTribune before former USD sports information director Kyle Johnson told him about the Argus Leader. His first trip to Vermillion and the DakotaDome followed shortly thereafter.
