MADEIRA BEACH, Fla.—South Dakota senior
Jamie Holscher's walk-off two-run homer in the bottom of the seventh inning to beat Purdue highlighted day two at the Madeira Beach Invitational Saturday at R.O.C. Park.
The 4-2 victory avenged an early season loss to the Boilermakers (6-5) a year ago and was South Dakota's second win against a Big Ten program (Wisconsin, 2016). Holscher was 3-for-4 in the game with three RBIs. It was her fourth home run of the season and the second walk-off homer in as many weekends.
Coyote starter
Alexis Devers, fresh off her 1-hit shutout from Friday, allowed six hits in five innings Saturday before leaving with a 2-0 deficit. Her offense got her off the hook with two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Jessica Rogers led off with a double and scored on a single to right by Holscher. Holscher made her way to third during the inning and scored the tying run on a wild pitch.
Sarah Lisko (2-0) pitched two scoreless innings to set the stage in the seventh. Purdue reliever Sydney Bates (1-2) got the first two outs easy enough, but walked Rogers before surrendering the winner to Holscher.
Drexel 20, South Dakota 5
It was Drexel that Holscher beat with a three-run homer in the eighth inning last week at the same ballpark. Apparently, the Dragons hadn't forgotten about it. They scored 14 runs in the first inning to avenge last week's defeat. Kristi DiMeo was 3-for-3 with two home runs and six RBIs to lead Drexel (3-6) to a 20-5 win.
Holscher homered again against Drexel. She hit a solo shot in the top of the second inning for her second home run of the day and fifth of the season. Holscher was 2-for-3 in game two. She leads the Summit with a .500 average (23-for-46), five home runs and 22 RBIs.
USD leadoff
Camille Fowler was 3-for-3 in the nightcap and scored twice. Rogers drove in two runs.
Lauren Eamiguel had an RBI double.
Dustie Durham (4-3) was chased in the first inning and took the loss. USD gave the ball to outfielder
Alexis Egan in the third inning. She gave up three runs on three hits in her inning of work.
The loss ends South Dakota's three-game win streak. The Coyotes (10-4) wrap up play in Florida Sunday with a 11:30 a.m. (ET) game against Middle Tennessee State (6-7).
