TEMPE, Ariz.—There would be no upset on Sunday. Arizona State batted around in the first inning and got two home runs and six RBIs from sophomore Bella Loomis in a 12-0, five-inning win against South Dakota at Farrington Stadium.
Loomis hit a grand slam as part of a seven-run first inning for the 16
th-ranked Sun Devils (19-7). She added a two-run shot in the third giving her a team-high nine home runs on the season. Loomis had no home runs and 10 RBIs in 79 at bats as a freshman last season.
Pitcher Abby Andersen took care of the rest. She tossed a three-hitter to move to 6-3 on the year. Two of those three hits came in the third inning when USD had the bases loaded with no outs. But Andersen got a 5-2-3 double play before inducing another ground ball to get out of the jam unscathed.
South Dakota (16-12) finished 2-3 in three days at the ASU tournament including Saturday's 6-4 win against No. 23/25 Michigan, and were 5-8 on its Spring Break trip overall. Junior center fielder
Camille Fowler was the team's top hitter during the week, going 14-for-41 (.341) with two doubles, a triple and seven runs scored. Sophomore
