No. 16 Arizona State blanks South Dakota

SB: ASU 12, USD 0

TEMPE, Ariz.—There would be no upset on Sunday. Arizona State batted around in the first inning and got two home runs and six RBIs from sophomore Bella Loomis in a 12-0, five-inning win against South Dakota at Farrington Stadium.

Loomis hit a grand slam as part of a seven-run first inning for the 16th-ranked Sun Devils (19-7). She added a two-run shot in the third giving her a team-high nine home runs on the season. Loomis had no home runs and 10 RBIs in 79 at bats as a freshman last season.

Pitcher Abby Andersen took care of the rest. She tossed a three-hitter to move to 6-3 on the year. Two of those three hits came in the third inning when USD had the bases loaded with no outs. But Andersen got a 5-2-3 double play before inducing another ground ball to get out of the jam unscathed.

South Dakota (16-12) finished 2-3 in three days at the ASU tournament including Saturday's 6-4 win against No. 23/25 Michigan, and were 5-8 on its Spring Break trip overall. Junior center fielder Camille Fowler was the team's top hitter during the week, going 14-for-41 (.341) with two doubles, a triple and seven runs scored. Sophomore Lauren Eamiguel was 10-for-31 (.323) with five runs scored. Senior Alyssa Fernandez had two home runs, two doubles and scored a team-best 10 runs.

The Coyotes will play four games in Macon, Georgia, next weekend before diving into Summit League play. The home team, Mercer, along with Ball State, Cleveland State and Fordham will be the opponents.
