Marathon Coyotes sweep Western to start Summit play

SB: USD 4-3, WIU 3-2

MACOMB, Ill.—South Dakota softball won a pair of extra-inning affairs to begin Summit League play, downing Western Illinois 4-3 in 12 innings and 3-2 in eight innings Saturday at Mary Ellen Stadium.

In a series that figured to matchup USD hitting against WIU pitching, it was the Coyote arms who stole the spotlight. Alexis Devers pitched 10 2/3 innings and tossed more than 200 pitches in outdueling 2017 Summit League Pitcher of the Year Emily Ira in the opener. Dustie Durham kept the momentum going with a complete-game five-hitter in the nightcap.

The offensive heroes were Camille Fowler and Jamie Holscher. It was a two-out, two-strike infield single by Fowler in the top of the seventh inning of game one that tied the game at 2-2 and forced extras. Holscher, who already has two walk-off homers this season, drilled a two-run blast off Ira to center field in the 12th that ended the stalemate. It was Holscher's league leading eighth home run of the season.

Fowler delivered the go-ahead RBI with a single just over the glove of Leatherneck shortstop Sydney Hollings in the top of the eighth inning of game two. The hit scored Lauren Eamiguel from second after Eamiguel singled and stole second to move into scoring position.

Fowler had two hits in each game. She led off game one with her third triple of the season and scored on a base hit by Alyssa Fernandez to put USD (19-15, 2-0 Summit) ahead 1-0. Fernandez was 3-for-6 in the opener and added a fourth hit in game two.

Devers finished with a career-high eight strikeouts. Her only blemish was a two-run homer by Payton Abbott in the third inning that gave WIU a 2-1 lead. She surrendered just four hits from the fourth inning on and retired 11 of 13 spanning innings 6-9.

Sarah Lisko relieved Devers in the 11th and became the pitcher of record when Holscher homered in the top of the 12th. Devers re-entered with a runner on third and one out in the bottom half. An error allowed the run to score to make it 4-3, but Devers got Aly Compton to foul out for the final out.

Durham (8-6) struck out five and walked two. A wild pitch helped a run come around in the third inning and the Leathernecks (6-14, 0-2) strung three of their five hits together to tie the game at 2-2 in the sixth. But Durham retired the final eight batters she faced to close the game.

Game three is set for 11 a.m. Sunday.
