Coyotes blank Western Illinois in Summit League opener

TEN: USD 7, WIU 0

SIOUX FALLS – South Dakota women's tennis upped its win streak to five matches following Friday's 7-0 win over Western Illinois.

The Coyotes, now 6-7 overall and 1-0 in Summit League play, dropped just two sets in a match that was moved from Vermillion to Sioux Falls and played indoors at Huether Family Match Pointe.

The doubles tandems of Jana Lazarevic and Luana Stanciu along with Emma Tranberg and Nanette Nylund won their matches to claim the doubles point for South Dakota.

Lazarevic, a sophomore, won her third straight match at No. 1 singles when she posted a 6-2, 6-0 win over Mia Melnizki.

Anastasiia Bondarenko, a senior, followed with a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 6 singles over Megan Tagaloa. Bondarenko is now 3-1 at No. 6 singles this season and 5-1 overall.

Tranberg, a sophomore, earned a 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 3 singles over Mary Bjelica while Nylund, a junior, earned her sixth straight win, by downing Laura Ballesteros 7-6, 6-3 at No. 5 singles.

Stanciu, a senior, overcame a dropped first set to post a win at No. 4 singles by pulling out a 10-3 tie-break win.

Natka Kmošková, a freshman, posted an 11-9 tie-break set win at No. 2 singles over Ana Bjelica.

"It's always nice to get the first conference win," said coach Brett Barnett. "I thought we played really good focused doubles. Jana and Bondy win really fast and gave us a nice 3-0 lead.

"Western pushed us in singles and we did a nice job playing out of some tough spots. I'm really happy with how mentally strong we were today. We need to be ready for a tough match against ORU tomorrow."

Oral Roberts (3-14, 1-3), who dropped a 4-3 decision at Omaha on Friday, will face South Dakota at 4:30 p.m. Saturday inside Huether Famiy Match Pointe.
