Long ball gets Huskers past Coyotes

SB: NEB 9, USD 2

LINCOLN, Neb.—Lindsey Walljasper and Alyvia Simmons both smacked three-run homers in leading Nebraska to a 9-2 win against South Dakota Tuesday at Bowling Stadium. It was the second meeting between the two programs in as many seasons.

The long balls were part of six-run second inning for Nebraska (16-27) that gave the Huskers a 7-0 lead. That was plenty for Walljasper, who allowed just two runs in five innings of work inside the circle. She struck out five and walked one.

Alyssa Fernandez and Skylar Arellano had two hits apiece and each drove in a run during a two-run third inning that cut the lead to 7-2. The Coyotes (31-21) had the bases loaded with just one out later in the inning, but were unable to push any more across.

It was the final non-conference game of the season for South Dakota. The Coyotes are off this weekend and close out the regular season May 3-4 in a three-game series against South Dakota State in Brookings.
