BROOKINGS, S.D.—South Dakota State racked up nearly as many hits as it did in two games yesterday in rolling to a 14-2, five-inning win against South Dakota in the rubber match of a three-game series at Jackrabbit Stadium.
SDSU shortstop Yanney Ponce was 3-for-3 with a home run and five RBIs while first baseman Ali Herdliska added a three-run homer, her Summit-leading 13
th of the season. The Jacks (34-15, 11-7 Summit) totaled 12 hits in all including five for extra bases.
South Dakota (31-24, 12-6) got two hits from
Lauren Eamiguel and RBIs from
Dustie Durham and
Skylar Arellano. Starting pitcher
Alexis Devers, who was one out from a complete-game shutout Friday, didn't make it out of the first inning Saturday. The Jacks scored six runs – all with two outs – in the first inning, and tacked on four more in the second.
Summit Tournament Field Set
Despite the win, South Dakota State didn't get the help it needed to move up from the No. 4 position. The Jacks will play the first game of next week's Summit League Tournament at 3 p.m. Wednesday in Fargo, North Dakota. It will be an elimination game against fifth-seeded North Dakota.
Western Illinois is the three seed and will face sixth-seeded Purdue Fort Wayne in an elimination game Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. The winner will face South Dakota Thursday at 2:30 p.m.
