The Game
South Dakota and Oklahoma are meeting for the first time. This is the Coyotes' first trip to the state since 1974 and the fifth Big 12 (or former Big Eight) program South Dakota will meet.

South Dakota has faced an FBS program every year since 2010, and has wins against Minnesota (2010) and Bowling Green (2017) in that span. Future seasons include Iowa State (2020), Kansas (2021) and Missouri (2022).

The Sooners
Oklahoma boasts the last two Heisman Trophy winners in quarterbacks Baker Mayfield (2017) and Kyler Murray (2018), and their new quarterback is Jalen Hurts, an Alabama graduate who passed for 332 yards, ran for 176 and accounted for six touchdowns in a week one win against Houston. Like South Dakota, the Sooners are breaking in a new defensive coordinator in Alex Grinch, a co-coordinator and safeties coach at Ohio State in 2018. He returns junior linebacker Kenneth Murray, the preseason Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year.

The Coyotes
South Dakota is looking for improvement following a week one home loss to nationally-ranked Montana. The Coyotes were 2 of 10 on third down in that game and were turned away without points on some lengthy second-half drives near the red zone. Defensively, the Coyotes gave up 427 yards passing and more than 500 yards in all to a talented and experienced Montana offense.

On the bright side, Coyote fans welcomed the return of receiver Kody Case, who dazzled in the opener to the tune of 11 catches (USD single-game record), a career-high 144 yards and two touchdowns. The offensive line, which was breaking in four starters, was solid in its debut and a senior-laden defensive line controlled the line of scrimmage and stopped the run. The Coyotes also intercepted two passes and had two sacks.

Milestone Watch
South Dakota senior quarterback Austin Simmons, the Valley's leading passer a year ago, entered the Coyotes' top-10 career passing rankings last week and currently sits seventh with 3,780 yards. That means he is 220 yards shy of 4,000. Defensively, junior linebacker Jack Cochrane, who led USD with nine stops in week one and came away with his first collegiate interception, enters Saturday with 99 career tackles.

One Last Thing…
Oklahoma is playing just its fifth FCS opponent since 1999. They beat Indiana State 49-0 in 1999, Chattanooga 57-2 in 2008, Idaho State 64-0 in 2009 and Florida A&M 69-13 in 2012.
