Coyotes go 3-0 at Kangaroo Klassic

VB: KC

KANSAS CITY, Missouri – South Dakota volleyball closed out the Kangaroo Klassic with a sweep over Louisiana Tech and win the tournament with a 3-0 mark.

The Coyotes, now 6-1, downed the Lady Techsters 25-19, 25-22, 25-13 behind a season-high .361 team hitting percentage.

"This was another good weekend for our program," coach Leanne Williamson said. "I was really happy with the way we bounced back after the Iowa State match on Tuesday. We made some key changes that allowed us to have success this weekend.

"The balance that we showed this weekend was really important. We had different people step up in different moments which allowed us to score points efficiently even if someone was struggling."

Eight different Coyotes registered kills against Louisiana Tech as tournament MVP Madison Jurgens contributed 32 assists, four service aces, four kills and 10 digs in the contest.

Jurgens, a sophomore, had 105 assists, eight kills, nine service aces and 21 digs in the three matches.

Sami Slaughter, joining Jurgens on the all-tournament team, had 11 kills and was in double figures in kills in all three matches, totaling 34. The junior had a .440 hitting percentage in the match.

Maddie Wiedenfeld tallied 11 kills and a .500 hitting percentage while also providing offense in the win were Elizabeth Juhnke with eight kills, Claire Gerdes six kills and Elizabeth Loschen five.

Lolo Weideman had 10 digs, Juhnke eight and Anne Rasmussen six while Wiedenfeld tallied six block assists in the match.

"Our goal is to consistently get better as matches and weekends go on, and I believe we did that overall," Williamson said. "We had a little let down in this final match, but they bounced back and took care of our side in the third set.

"We are looking forward to a good week of practice and having the opportunity to play in front of our home crowd next weekend!  We need Coyote nation to come out and make a difference in our next matches!!"

The South Dakota Classic begins on Friday inside the Sanford Coyote Sports Center as UC Davis, Wyoming and Iowa come to Vermillion.
