VANCOURVER, Washington – South Dakota captured the doubles point, but couldn't continue the momentum into singles play, suffering a 6-1 women's tennis setback to Portland State on Friday inside the Vancouver Tennis Center.
The Coyotes (0-3) doubles teams of
Jana Lazarevic and
Berta Girbau along with
Habiba Aly and
Agustina Diaz won matches at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles play, respectively, by 7-5 counts.
However, South Dakota was easily defeated in singles play, winning only one set, that by freshman
Eesha Varma at No. 6 singles.
"Portland State took it to us in singles today," coach Brett Bartnett said. "We did a great job coming out with energy and playing good doubles. That was really nice to see.
"Again we just keep putting ourselves in tough positions to win singles matches. We played well at times but it's just too inconsistent right now. We've got a quick turnaround and need to get ready to play a complete match against Seattle."
