MADEIRA BEACH, Fla.—It was a tale of two games as South Dakota made quick work of Georgetown 12-4 before falling to Manhattan 10-2 Friday at the Madeira Beach Invitational at R.O.C. Park. Both games were five-inning affairs.
South Dakota shortstop
Lauren Eamiguel was 4-for-5 on the day and
Jordyn Pender made her first collegiate home run a grand slam. Also,
Lauren Wobken laced two doubles and pitcher
Sarah Lisko tossed her third complete game in four starts to improve to 4-1 in the circle this season.
Pender's granny was a no-doubt shot to left center in the first inning of the day that gave the Coyotes a 4-1 lead against the Hoyas (1-10). In the second inning, it was a two-run single by
Aleesia Sainz, a bases-loaded walk by Pender and a two-run single by Kiersten Denning that extended USD's leads to 9-2.
Pender came up again in the fourth and drove a sacrifice fly to center for her sixth RBI of the game. That's tied for the second-most by a Coyote since 2000.
Lisko, meanwhile, worked around a solo home run by Ciara Sullivan in the second and a two-run shot by Georgetown catcher Mae Forshey in the third. Lisko gave up eight hits and three earned runs while striking out four.
South Dakota jumped out to another lead in game two against Manhattan (2-0). Eamiguel singled and scored in the top of the first, and
Skylar Arellano and Wobken roped back-to-back doubles in the second. The Coyotes threatened again in the third and fourth innings, but two outs on the base paths chopped scoring opportunities.
Pitcher
Alexis Devers started for USD and managed to escape the third with just two runs of damage. Freshman
Holly Fletcher took the ball in the fourth, but a leadoff walk followed by eight hits and some defensive miscues led to an 8-run inning for Manhattan, which sent 13 batters to the plate in the frame.
Four Coyote batters later and the game was over. Jessie Rising earned the complete-game win for the Jaspers, allowing eight hits and striking out three.
South Dakota (5-8) is back in action Saturday against Colgate (4 p.m. ET) and Providence (6:30 p.m. ET).
