CEDAR FALLS, Iowa—UNI avenged its season-opening loss to South Dakota by beating the Coyotes 9-4 in the final game of the Doc Halverson UNI-Dome Classic Sunday. USD finished 2-3 on its opening weekend while the Panthers went 3-3.
South Dakota's top-two hitters,
Camille Fowler and
Courtney Wilson, combined for five hits and scored all four runs for the Coyotes. USD scored twice in the top of the first, but was answered with an Ashley Chesser two-run homer in the bottom of the first. Chesser homered again in the third inning to give UNI a 5-2 lead. The Panthers scored at least one run in all six frames.
UNI designated player Hannah Kelley roped a two-run double in the second inning, an RBI double in the fourth and a two-run homer in the sixth. The Panthers outhit the Coyotes 11-7
Panther freshman Samantha Heyer went the distance to earn her first collegiate win. She struck out eight and walked two.
Alexis Devers (0-1) started and took the loss for South Dakota.
Wilson, a sophomore, recorded her first three-hit game. She totaled a team-high six hits on the opening week, joining freshman
Jordyn Pender who hit a team-high .400 (6-for-15) in Cedar Falls.
Lauren Eamiguel and
Aleesia Sainz drove in four runs each on the trip.
South Dakota will spend the next two weekends in Madeira Beach, Florida. The Coyotes will play six games Feb. 14-16 starting with Akron Friday at 4 p.m. (ET).
