ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.—Andrea Howard's first-inning home run set the tone and Kiana Spencer pitched into the seventh inning to lead New Mexico to a 6-4 win against South Dakota Sunday on the final day of the Lobo Classic.
South Dakota (11-10) finished 3-2 in its first trip to New Mexico with both losses coming to the home team. Coyote shortstop
Lauren Eamiguel was 2-for-4 with three RBIs Sunday. She has hit safety in 10 straight games, going 20-for-32 (.625) with 16 RBIs and 11 runs scored in that span. Eamiguel has had multiple hits in seven games during the streak.
New Mexico (10-10) took advantage of a dropped fly ball to post three runs in the opening inning and held a 6-1 lead going into the final frame.
Jadyn DeWitte doubled and
Aleesia Sainz walked to begin the top of the seventh for South Dakota.
Courtney Wilson loaded the bases with a one-out single, and Eamiguel scored two with a base hit up the middle.
That was all for Spencer, who allowed six hits, struck out four and walked four in 6 1/3 innings. Kennedy Ferguson relieved her and gave up an RBI groundout to
Dylan Underwood before inducing another ground ball to end the game.
Eamiguel was 10-for-18 with two doubles and 10 RBIs on the trip.
Jordyn Pender, the leading hitter in the Summit entering the week, was 6-for-13 to bump her season average to .439. Wilson was 7-for-19 with three runs scored.
South Dakota continues play March 6-8 at the Wildcat Invitational hosted by University of Arizona in Tucson.
