PHOENIX, Ariz.—South Dakota was unable to push a run across during its first two games of the Grand Canyon Invitational Wednesday. The Coyotes dropped a 3-0 decision to Lehigh in the opener and lost 9-0 in five innings to Grand Canyon in the nightcap in games played at GCU Softball Stadium.
Lehigh (8-8) got a complete-game shutout from Parker Boyd, who struck out five and walked one. South Dakota leadoff batter
Courtney Wilson had two of the Coyotes' eight hits off Boyd. Wilson was stranded on third in the first inning and on second in the third. Just one other USD player reached second base during the contest.
Lehigh shortstop Carley Barjaktarovich reached on bunt singles and came around to score in both the first and fifth innings. Emily Cimino was 2-for-3 and drove in Barjaktarovich twice.
The second game was dominated in all facets by the host Lopers (6-20). Grand Canyon pitcher Ryan Denhart was two outs from a five-inning, perfect game when
Gabbi Holbert hit a ball that Denhart was unable to backhand and it trickled away for an infield single. Denhart retired the next two batters to end the game.
Grand Canyon scored three unearned runs in the second and two more USD errors helped lead to a six-run third inning for the Lopes. All nine of their hits were singles. GCU third baseman Savannah Tourville was 3-for-3 with three RBIs.
South Dakota resumes play Friday with a rematch against Lehigh at 10 a.m. (PT) followed by a 3 p.m. (PT) bout with Pacific.
