VERMILLION, S.D. – South Dakota's six game unbeaten streak and five-game win streak came to an end Sunday afternoon at the First Bank & Trust Soccer Complex. The Yotes fell to Western Illinois for their first loss at home and of Summit League play. With the loss, the Yotes move to 6-2-2 and 1-1 in conference action while the Leathernecks move to 7-3-1 and 1-1 in league play.
How it Happened
- The Leathernecks struck early in the 11th minute of action when Amy Andrews got past a diving Emma Harkleroad to give the Leathernecks an early 1-0 on the afternoon. Harkleroad charged Andrews and wasn't able to clear the ball before Andrews was wide open in the box to place a shot on goal.
- The Yotes had one of their best chances of the first half a few minutes later in the 16th minute off a corner kick. Senior Taylor Cotter booted one into the box where sophomore Taylor Ravelo was able to get her head on it but the goalie was able to get in front of it for the save.
- USD had two more good shots before the whistle blew for halftime. The first was in the 18th minutes when fifth year senior Alexis Mitchell tried to push one pash the goalie in the bottom left corner but WIU's goalie was able to step in front of it. The second was in the 20th minute when Jordan Centineo's shot ricocheted off the crossbar.
- Western Illinois stuck gold once more before half in the 31st minute when Andrews snuck one passed Harkleroad in the bottom left corner of the goal.
- The Yotes came out hot in the second half placing three shots just a tad too high of the net. In the 69th minute Kayla Aymar's shot on goal was almost knocked in a Leatherneck defender before WIU's goalie stopped it.
- In the 77th minute, Cotter lined up for a free kick just in front of the Yotes' bench and rocketed one into the box for Mitchell to get a head on it to cut the lead to 2-1 with just under 15 minutes left.
- The Yotes comeback bid came up just short when Cotter's attempt on a breakaway just missed left of the goal.
