USD Falls to Omaha in Regular Season Finale

 
OMAHA, Neb. – The South Dakota women's soccer team will be the No. 4 seed at the Summit League Tournament on Thursday after falling to Omaha 1-0 Sunday afternoon at Caniglia Field. South Dakota moves to 10-4-3 overall and 5-3-1 in Summit play while Omaha moves to 9-7-1 and 6-3-0 in Summit play.

The Yotes will face Denver, who defeated South Dakota State on Sunday to earn the No. 1 seed in the tournament, on Thursday at 2 p.m. in the No. 1/4 matchup. 
 
How it Happened
  • It was a defensive battle for the majority of the first 45 minutes of action in Omaha as neither team had must offensive threat. Omaha put three shots on goal in which fifth year senior Emma Harkleroad was able to get in front of for the save.
  • In the second half, both teams' offenses came alive a bit more. USD put two shots on goal in the first 10 minutes of action but it was Omaha's Sophia Green shot on goal off a shot that bounced off Harkleroad that put the Mavericks ahead 1-0.
  • The Coyotes tried to put more pressure on the offensive side of things for the rest of the game but were unable to get one past the goalkeeper.
  • Two of the best opportunities for the Yotes were in the 77th minute when Isabelle Sorge broke down her defender at the top of the box to place a shot on goal but Omaha's Rachel Thigpen got in front of it for the save. The last shot for the Yotes came in the 84th minute when sophomore Taylor Ravelo placed on goal but was stopped by Thigpen.
Game Notes
  • South Dakota earns the fourth seed in the conference tournament for the second straight season. The Yotes will await the winner of the Denver, SDSU game to see who they play on Thursday in the semifinals.
  • Sunday marked the first time the Yotes failed to score first since October 3 and the first time the Yotes failed to score a goal since September 2 at Creighton.
  • The Coyotes end the season 4-1-1 after recording back-to-back losses to Western Illinois and ORU.
Up Next
The Yotes will compete in the Summit League Tournament on Thursday at 2 p.m. in Denver, Colorado against Denver in the No.1/4 matchup. If the Yotes win Thursday they will play in the conference championship on Saturday at 3 p.m.
