Owls take two Friday in Florida

BOCA RATON, Fla.—Florida Atlantic senior catcher Kaitlyn Burke went 6-for-6 with a home run and three RBIs to lead the Owls to a doubleheader sweep of South Dakota Friday at FAU Stadium. Scores went 7-2 and 7-1.

Burke homered in her second at bat of the day in the third inning of game one to put the Owls ahead 2-1, and singled again during a five-run fourth inning that broke the game open. FAU outhit the Coyotes 12-5 in game one. Jadyn DeWitte doubled, singled and scored a run for South Dakota.

South Dakota jumped out to another 1-0 lead in game two after Lauren Eamiguel reached base and scored on a Skylar Arellano single in the first. Burke singled and scored in the second to tie the game at 1-1 and did the same to start the fourth that put the Owls ahead 2-1.

FAU (5-15) tacked on three runs in the fifth and two more in the sixth. That was plenty for pitchers Donnie Gobourne and Lynn Gardner who combined to allow just four hits in the nightcap. Gobourne tossed the first four innings and struck out five to get the win. Gardner faced the minimum in her three innings and got a save.

Kierstin Denning led USD with three hits during the twin bill. Lauren Wobken had a double and Camille Fowler reached base three times. Holly Fletcher started in the circle for game one and Sarah Lisko started the nightcap.

South Dakota (4-12) concludes its Spring Break trip with a three-game, weekend series against Florida International. The series starts with a 1 p.m. (ET) doubleheader Saturday in Miami.
