VERMILLION, S.D. – Kansas City outlasted South Dakota in a five-set battle between the top two teams in the Summit League standings on Friday evening inside the Sanford Coyote Sports Center.
The Roos, now 12-1 overall and in Summit League play, had four players record double figures in kills during the 25-22, 16-25, 18-25, 25-22, 15-12 win.
The Coyotes, meanwhile, had three players reach double figures in kills, had a higher hitting percentage than Kansas City, but came up on the short end of the win-loss spectrum in a battle for the lead in the conference.
South Dakota, falling to 11-5 overall and 10-2 in the Summit League, hit .168 on the night compared to .101 for Kansas City, though the visitors only had eight attack errors combined over the last two sets after having 28 in the first three sets.
Elizabeth Juhnke had 18 kills and 13 digs to record her 11
th double-double of the season while
Sami Slaughter had 13 kills and
Maddie Wiedenfeld 10 for the Coyotes.
Junior setter
Madison Jurgens contributed 43 assists and a career-high 25 digs and moved into fifth on the school's all-time assists chart.
Lolo Weideman also had 25 digs to go with six assists for South Dakota.
Kansas City pulled out the first set after trailing 20-22, scoring the final five points and despite dropping sets two and three, regained momentum with a set four win. The fifth set featured three lead changes and five ties.
The two teams will square off on Saturday evening at 7 p.m.
