Coyotes Host Omaha for Senior Weekend

VERMILLION, S.D. — The South Dakota Coyotes will host the Omaha Mavericks in the home opener on Friday at 4 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m. at the First Bank & Trust Soccer Complex.

LAST TIME OUT

The Yotes went to Denver to face the preseason favorites. In the first match, the Yotes struck first after the Pios goalkeeper fumbled a shot from Alexis Mitchell and Shaylee Gailus knocked it in. Denver tied things up in the 55th minute and after 90 minutes the game went into overtime. In the final minute of the first overtime Denver connected on a corner kick to give them the win. 

In the second game, the Yotes held Denver scoreless in game two until the 81st minute where the Pioneers would score the eventual game winner. USD recorded six shots with three shots on goal. 

SENIOR WEEKEND
Senior Sunny Huettner is one of four seniors listed on the 2020-21 roster, but is the only one not taking advantage of the NCAA offer to come back for one more season. Huettner is a native of Overland Park, Kansas, and has played in 30 games for the Yotes in her four seasons. She has logged over 1,400 minutes on the pitch in a Coyote uniform and has earned several academic conference honors. 

"Sunny has always put the team first," head coach Michael Thomas said. "She has battled back from significant injuries to continue to play college soccer and has played several different positions. She is a cerebral soccer player who makes the players around her better and it has been my privilege to coach her."

HOME OPENER
The Yotes are 3-5-1 in Summit League home openers. Under Thomas, the Yotes defeated Oral Roberts in his first season and fell to Denver last season. 

SERIES HISTORY
Omaha holds a 17-3-1 record all-time against the Yotes. The teams first played each other in USD's inaugural season with Omaha winning 5-1. USD is 2-8-1 in Vermillion against the Mavs. The Yotes won last season's matchup 4-2 in Vermillion. 

A LOOK ACROSS THE PITCH
The Mavs sit 2-2-2 in the Summit League. Omaha opened the season at home against SDSU where they had back-to-back scoreless draws. The next weekend, the Mavericks recorded two shutouts over UND and scored seven total goals over the weekend. Last week, Omaha was swept by NDSU with scores of 3-2 (OT) and 2-0.
