VERMILLION, S.D.—South Dakota left fielder
Courtney Wilson stayed hot with four hits and
Gill Woodward tossed her second career complete game to lead the Coyotes to a doubleheader split with Kansas City to begin a four-game weekend series Saturday at Nygaard Field. The Roos took game one 4-2 and the Coyotes won the nightcap 6-4.
Â
Wilson was 3-for-3 in game two with two RBIs and a run scored. She singled and scored as part of a two-run first inning. Her base hit up the middle plated
Skylar Arellano to make it 3-0 in the second. A sac fly in the fourth helped make it 5-2. Wilson added a bunt single in the sixth.
Â
Camille Fowler singled ahead of Wilson in the sixth and came around to score what proved to be a crucial insurance run. Fowler had two hits on the day and moved into fifth place on the Coyotes' all-time scoring list with 140.
Â
After earning her first collegiate victory in the circle last week at North Dakota State, Woodward added her second against Kansas City (19-17, 3-7 Summit). Woodward allowed nine hits and induced a number of fly balls to her outfielders to move to 2-3 on the season. Kansas City put the tying run on first base in the top of the seventh, but USD third baseman
Aleesia Sainz made a fine play at third and threw across the diamond to record the final out.
Â
South Dakota's game two win came after a tough loss in game one. Aces Mia Hoveland and
Sarah Lisko battled back and forth throughout, but it was two crucial errors in the field by the Coyotes (10-29, 5-5) that broke a 2-2 tie in the seventh and handed the game to the Roos.
Â
Sainz had a game-tying single in the fifth that scored
Gabby Moser to break the ice against Hoveland. And after Kansas City regained the lead on a Sydney McQuinn single in the top of the sixth,
Lauren Eamiguel countered with an opposite field smash to right center field for her first home run of the season and ninth of her collegiate career.
Â
Hoveland, the Summit's strikeout leader, punched out five against no walks in moving to 10-10 on the season. Lisko had two K's and scattered nine hits to fall to 5-12. Both pitchers tossed complete games.
Â
The two teams will conclude the series with an 11 a.m. doubleheader Sunday.
