VERMILLION, S.D. – The South Dakota Coyote put on a clinic Thursday night at the First Bank & Trust Soccer Complex in a 4-1 victory over Drake. The Yotes are now 3-1-2 on the season while the Bulldogs are 3-3-1.
How it Happened
- The Yotes struck early and often scoring three goals in the first 24 minutes of action. In the 2nd minute, fifth year senior Alexis Mitchell corralled the ball off a free kick from fifth year senior Abby Ostrem to set up sophomore Taylor Ravelo to punch it past the goalkeeper.
- Shortly after in the 4th minute, junior Shaylee Gailus headed a ball past the goalkeeper off a corner kick from Taylor Cotter to make the score 2-1 nearly four minutes into action.
- It was Gailus once again connecting on a beautiful header but this time it was Ostrem who was on the assist from a corner kick.
- With the score 3-0, the Yotes took their first lead heading into the half on the season.
- In the 57th minute of the second half, Drake positioned a beautiful free kick into the box for Libby Helverson to place it passed the goalkeeper for the Bulldogs only score of the game.
- After recording an assist earlier in the game, Ostrem lined up for a corner kick only to have it curve into the goal for her first goal of the season.
Game Notes
- The Yotes outshot the Bulldogs 15-13 while having the edge on corner kicks as well 10-2.
- USD recorded nine saves to Drake's five.
- South Dakota had three different players record an assist in Mitchell, Cotter and Ostrem.
- Ostrem's first goal of her career earned the No. 6 spot on Sport Center's #SCTop10 in 2018. Her goal against Drake is her second of her career.
- After tonight Cotter is four assists away from tying Tina Brummer for second all-time in assists at USD.
- Only three people on the current roster have recorded two or more goals coming into tonight. Gailus now joins them after recording two tonight against Drake.
- The Coyotes recorded the fifth fastest goal from the first whistle against Drake after setting the sixth fastest goal from the whistle against Wyoming earlier this season.
