South Dakota Takes on UNI in First Road Contest

The Game
The South Dakota women's soccer team makes its first road trip to Cedar Falls, Iowa, for a Sunday matinee against Northern Iowa. The Coyotes are looking for their first win of the new season after dropping a hard-fought match against Loyola Chicago last Thursday. Kick-off for today's match is scheduled for 1 pm from UNI Soccer Field and streamed live on ESPN+.

The Series
Though the Coyotes hold a 5-7-2 all-time record against the Panthers, they are coming off two consecutive wins. USD swept a quick home-and-home with UNI last season – taking both games in 1-0 fashion.

The Coyotes
South Dakota put up a good fight against the reigning Missouri Valley Champions Loyola Chicago in the opening game. The Coyotes had a few good chances late to knot the game up at one, but barely missed the mark on those chances. Senior Shaylee Gailus took four shots in the game and had the best opportunity for USD with an open shot at the top of the box that grazed over the crossbar.

In the most recent meeting, the Coyotes shut out the Panthers for the second straight time after facing ten shots and three on goal. Senior Jordan Centineo scored the game-winner in the 54th minute after a corner kick eventually fell in front of her and she netted her second goal of the 2021 season.

The Panthers
UNI is coming off a season-opening 2-1 win over Grand View. The Panthers scored their first goal off a penalty kick converted by Lauren Heinsch and their second on a late game blast from Siri Ott. Northern Iowa was able to hang on and capture its first win of the season.

The Panthers finished 2021 with a 6-10-2 record. They maintained a .500 average at home and outscored their opponents 19-12 at UNI Soccer Field. UNI struggled on the road last season, compiling a 1-5-2 record away from Cedar Falls. The season ended last year for the Panthers after dropping the opening-round game of the Missouri Valley Tournament against Drake. The game was tied 2-2 heading to overtime where Drake was able to score the golden goal and move on in the tournament.

One Last Thing
The Coyotes posted a 2-3-3 record on the road last season to go alongside their 8-1 record at home. One of their biggest road results came in a 1-1 draw against Denver a week before the 2021 Summit League Tournament.
