BROOKINGS, S.D.—South Dakota State watched South Dakota hoist the championship three years in a row and took its frustration out on a young, undersized and outmanned Coyote squad Saturday at Frost Arena.
Â
Super seniors Paiton Burckhard and Myah Selland scored 22 and 19 points, respectively, to lead the Jackrabbits to a 118-59 win to stay unbeaten in conference play at 7-0. It was the 97
th meeting between the two intrastate rivals.
Â
South Dakota (8-10, 4-3 Summit) played with nine healthy bodies after starting center
Jeniah Ugofsky was a scratch for the second time in three games. That number felt more like seven when starters
Grace Larkins and
Morgan Hansen couldn't stay out of foul trouble. The former, Larkins, is USD's leader in almost every category and the Coyotes were simply overmatched without her.
Â
South Dakota State (14-5) showed no mercy. Coach Aaron Johnston kept his starting lineup on the court until the score read 105-46 well into the fourth quarter. The Jacks placed six in double figures, made 17-of-32 three-pointers and shot 60 percent from the field. Defensively, they had 13 steals while South Dakota, with Larkins barely on the court, turned it over 23 times.
Â
Carley Duffney continued her solid play off the bench and led South Dakota with 14 points. Larkins reached 10. It was the first time in 14 games that Larkins didn't lead USD in scoring.
Â
South Dakota, one of the top 3-point shooting teams in the nation, was 5-of-18 on this day. The Coyotes made all 16 free throws they took but their counterparts made more than USD attempted. The Jacks also pummeled the Coyotes on the glass 44-23.
Â
It was the first game in a stretch where South Dakota will play five of seven on the road. The rematch is Feb. 11 in Vermillion. The Coyotes are at Denver Thursday and at Omaha Saturday next week.
