Coyotes clinch despite result in KC

KANSAS CITY—Goals near the end of the first half and start of the second were enough for Kansas City to score a 2-0 win against South Dakota Thursday night at Durwood Soccer Stadium.

It was three big points for Kansas City (3-6-7, 2-3-2 Summit), which can clinch a Summit League Tournament spot Sunday with a win against South Dakota State or a North Dakota loss at home against Denver. The Roos topped the Coyotes in Kansas City for the first time in three tries dating back to 2020.

South Dakota (7-5-4, 3-3-1) clinched a spot in the tournament despite its result Thursday. That came when St. Thomas worked a tie with North Dakota earlier in the day. The Coyotes can be seeded anywhere from three to six depending on Sunday's fixtures and Tuesday's final match between Omaha and South Dakota State.

The Coyote defense came out aggressive, stopping many of the passing attempts from the Roos. But as the first half came to a close, Caijah Anderson rebounded a blocked shot off a free kick and snuck the ball past South Dakota goalkeeper Caroline Lewis for the first score. It was Anderson's first goal of the season.

An early corner kick in the second half produced the second goal. Lewis was able to stop the initial header, but the rebound found Anna Jennings whose left-footed slap rung true.

Regardless of the score, the Coyotes continued to battle. Lewis had five saves on the night compared to the Roos' two. Defender Taylor Ravelo stopped many advances made by the Roos to help protect the Coyote goal. Ravelo and Brooke Conway led the team with three shots each.

The next stop for the Coyotes will be their last game of the regular season in Tulsa, Oklahoma, where they will take on Oral Roberts on Sunday at 1 p.m.
