Scoreless tie nets Coyotes a point in Omaha

OMAHA, Neb.—South Dakota goalkeeper Caroline Lewis made five great saves and the Coyotes stole a point by tying defending Summit League Tournament champion Omaha 0-0 Thursday night at Caniglia Field. It is the second year in a row the two teams have earned a point.

Lewis earned her fifth shutout of the season and the Coyotes (6-3-4, 2-1-1 Summit) posted their sixth clean sheet on the year. Lewis made a clutch save in the last 20 seconds of the game, just barely tapping the ball above the crossbar when Omaha (4-4-5, 1-1-3) took a shot on-goal from a header generated by a corner kick.

Each team tallied just one shot on goal in the first half as aggressive defense forced most of the play in the midfield. The offensive intensity picked up in the second half when both teams started to hone in on their attack. South Dakota tallied six shots with two on-goal. The Mavericks racked up 12 shots, four of which were on goal.

The defense won the day despite the Summit League's top two goal scorers seeing the pitch. Omaha's Sophia Green fired six shots with three on goal. South Dakota's Ashby Johnston was limited to just one look. Coyote defenders Taylor Ravelo and Maliah Atkins played all 90 minutes of the match and Brooke Kercher-Pratt also played crucial minutes on the backend.

The point in the standings gives South Dakota seven, good for fourth place at the halfway point of the Summit slate. A date with defending champion Denver (7-1-5, 3-0-1), atop the standings with 10 points, waits in Colorado Sunday at 1 p.m. (CT).
