FB: Four named to all-newcomer team

11.28.2023

ST. LOUIS—Charles Pierre Jr., Mosai Newsom, Joe Cotton and Parker Fryar represent South Dakota football on the MVFC All-Newcomer Team announced Tuesday. It marks the third time in the last six seasons that four or more Coyotes have been named to the team.

Pierre Jr. is a redshirt-freshman from Orlando, Florida. He ran 55 times for 320 yards and scored four touchdowns in six MVFC games. His 81-yard touchdown run at Indiana State was the longest play from scrimmage by an MVFC team during the regular season. He finished with 107 yards that day and was named MVFC Newcomer of the Week. Pierre Jr. has also caught nine passes.

Newsom is a junior from Waverly, Iowa, who competed at Nebraska last season. He competed in seven games and served as a run stopper for the Coyotes' nationally-ranked defense. His six tackles include one for loss.

Cotton, a redshirt freshman from Sioux Falls, South Dakota, started all 11 games at left tackle for a program that ranks second nationally in fewest tackles-for-loss allowed and 12th nationally in fewest sacks allowed. He aided a unit that put up a season-high 559 yards at Western Illinois and surpassed 400 yards of offense five times. South Dakota had four rushing touchdowns in three games this season.

Fryar is a junior from Waukee, Iowa, who was an all-American linebacker for NAIA national champion Northwestern a season ago. Fryar is the eighth-leading tackler for the Coyotes this season. He has an interception and forced a fumble. He had a season-high 10 tackles in the Coyotes' 14-7 win at Southern Illinois.

South Dakota (9-2) hosts Sacramento State (7-4) in a second round FCS playoff game at 1 p.m. Saturday inside the DakotaDome.
