CEDAR FALLS, Iowa—South Dakota right fielder
Gabby Moser went 7-for-7 with a home run, two doubles, two walks and 10 RBIs in leading the Coyotes to a pair of season-opening wins Sunday inside the UNI-Dome. South Dakota beat Drake 12-9 and defending Missouri Valley champion UNI 9-6.
Â
Moser hit a three-run homer in the first inning and in her first at bat of the season against Drake. She was 4-for-4 with a walk in game one with seven RBIs – the most by a Coyote since Allie Daly drove in seven in 2013.
Â
That wasn't the only headline for game one. Center fielder
Courtney Wilson was 4-for-5 with two runs scored. It was the second four-hit game of her career. South Dakota was credited with 19 hits against Drake.
Â
USD first baseman
Jordyn Pender broke a 9-9 tie in the sixth inning with a two-run homer. It came after Drake walked Moser to start the inning. It was the eighth career home run for Pender and the second season in a row in which she homered in game one. Moser's RBI single in her fifth at bat of the game scored
Tatum Villotta and gave USD an insurance run.
Â
True freshman
Delaney White doubled in her first collegiate bat and went 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored.
Alecea Mendoza, a junior transfer from Kirkwood, also doubled in her first at bat as a Coyote. The offense made a winner out of
Kori Wedeking who tossed all seven innings for South Dakota. Wedeking played with Mendoza at Kirkwood the last two seasons.
Â
South Dakota scored four runs in the fifth and sixth innings to overcome a 5-1 deficit against UNI.
Aleesia Sainz and Moser set a table for Pender and
Bela Goerke in the fifth. Moser's two-run single in the sixth capped the scoring.
Â
Kynlee Marquez picked up the win against UNI. She entered to start the fourth inning and pitched into the seventh, allowing one run on two hits while South Dakota's bats got it rolling. True freshman Madi Mangulis got the final two outs for her first collegiate save.
Â
South Dakota travels to Denton, Texas, next weekend to compete in the North Texas Invitational.
