South Dakota heads out west

The Coyotes will travel to Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, this weekend for the Coeur d'Alene Resort Collegiate Invitational hosted by Gonzaga. Participants will play three rounds over the course of three days. The event begins Sunday with tee times starting at 9:30 a.m. PST.

The tournament will be held at Coeur d'Alene Golf & Spa Resort. The par 71 course spans 6,803 yards in length and encompasses 200 acres on the shores of Lake Coeur d'Alene.

The signature hole of Coeur d'Alene is No. 14, The Floating Green. The Floating Green is a movable island golf green situated in the water of Lake Coeur d'Alene. It is the world's first and only movable green that changes position daily via an underwater cable system. After the tee shot to the par 3 hole, golfers are ferried to the green via electric boat to finish the hole.

The field consists of 13 teams situated mostly on the western half of the country. USD and North Dakota State are representing the Summit League. The host Gonzaga, which placed third in this event a year ago, and San Francisco are out of the West Coast Conference. The WAC (3), Big West (3), Sun Belt (1) and AAC (1) are also represented.

South Dakota will send six women to Coeur d'Alene including freshman Ella Greenberg who has recorded a pair of top-five finishes to begin her collegiate career. Two weeks ago, Greenberg shot a school-record 67 during the third and final round of the Redbird Invitational in Normal, Illinois. She carries a 74.0 stroke average through two events.

Sophomores Catie Nekola, Alexa Wingnean, and Emma Henningsson will also be joining the Coyotes. At the Redbird Invitational, Nekola tied for fifth with Greenberg at even par for the tournament. The pair tied the third-best 54-hole score in program history. Nekola has a 75.4 stroke average through five rounds.

Rounding out the team are freshmen Ava Schroeder and Lara Gehring. Gehring will compete as an individual for the Coyotes. Schroeder placed fourth at North Dakota State in early September to kick off the season and has a 76.8 stroke average.
