South Dakota takes Jacks to double overtime, fall 2-1

VERMILLION, S.D. – For the third time in six Summit League Tournament appearances, the South Dakota women's soccer team found themselves headed to overtime for a chance to pick up a tournament victory, but ultimately it was the third-seeded Jackrabbits who prevailed 2-1 Friday night at Fishback Soccer Park.

The Coyotes had to lean heavily on the defense Friday night, and it worked for the first 85 minutes of play. They kept the Jackrabbits out of the back of the net and broke through with an opportunity of their own to lead 1-0.

In the 54th minute, Ashby Johnston reversed the field and found Izzy Quintavalle. Brooklyn Bordson headed the cross from Quintavalle into the top left corner for a goal to give the Coyotes a one goal advantage.

The Jacks applied the pressure for the remainder of half, getting multiple opportunities at an equalizer, but not converting. Finally, in the 86th minute, the Jacks broke through to tie the match.

In overtime, the Coyotes had a couple of opportunities to score early, but the Jacks were able to settle in and have their chances as well. Cambell Fischer, who totaled six saves in the match, made a diving stop to keep the game tied and force a second overtime period.

The Jacks scored the game-winner 16 seconds into the second overtime period off a free kick. It is the second time the Coyotes have lost in double overtime in the Summit League Tournament, with both losses coming in Brookings (2015 vs North Dakota State). The Coyotes have also lost in penalty kicks once.

In total, the Coyotes tallied six shots, with three on goal. Bordson scored her first goal as a Coyote in the match. Ashby Johnston had one shot on goal and one assist, moving her into a tie for 10th in the USD record books in both statistics.

The Coyote season comes to a close with the 2-1 loss. South Dakota finished the year 3-9-6 on the season with a 1-3-4 record in conference play.
