ATLANTA, Georgia – Belmont edged South Dakota in a pitcher's dual on Sunday 1-0 during the final day of the Panther Invitational hosted by Georgia State at Bob Heck Softball Complex.
Â
Belmont senior Emma Summers and South Dakota junior
Clara Edwards locked horns in a classic dual in the circle as the Bulldogs finally scratched across the winning run in the bottom of the sixth on a wild pitch.
Â
Summers limited the Coyotes offense to four hits while walking none and striking out eight. She needed 99 pitches to record her first win of the season.
Â
Edwards was equally tough in the circle, seeking a third straight shutout, had to settle for a tough luck loss as she allowed four hits and one earned run while walking one and striking out a season high eight batters. An untimely wild pitch with two outs and a runner on third in the sixth plated the game's lone run.
Â
Autumn Iversen doubled with one out in the top of the seventh but South Dakota could not plate the tying run.
Â
Rylie Jones,
Gabby Moser and
Alexis Lusk had singles in the loss.
Â
The Coyotes (4-6) will face a five-game weekend in Commerce, Texas next week at the Lion Invitational hosted by Texas A&M Commerce.
