VERMILLION, S.D. – South Dakota (11-9, 5-1 Summit) defeated North Dakota (9-12, 2-3 Summit) 6-1 in the regular season finale and final home match of the season in Vermillion Friday afternoon. The Coyotes honored seniors
Paige Alter and
Sydney Weinberg prior to the match.
Â
The Coyotes clinched the No. 2 seed in the upcoming Summit League Tournament and second place outright in the league standings. The 10 wins on the season matches head coach
Brett Barnett's highest total number of wins for the Yotes.
Â
"It was a very good win by the Yotes today," said Barnett. "We came in not wanting to be content already being in the tournament and wanted to play a good complete match. We competed so well and played with energy and pulled out a tight match."
Â
South Dakota clinched the doubles point for the sixth-straight Summit League match with wins at No.1 and No. 3.
Â
Bea Havlickova and
Paige Alter earned a 6-2 win at No. 1 doubles and
Amanda de Oliveira and
Sorcha Caves took a 6-2 win at No. 3.
Â
"Our doubles has been so good this year, we haven't lost a doubles point in league play and that just allows us to play with freedom," said Barnett. "Grace and Selena have been automatic and got us to three points and played so well."
Â
The Coyotes claimed five of the six singles matches, with wins from Havlickova, de Oliveira,
Anna Medvyedyeva,
Grace Chadick, and
Selena Bird.
Â
"We just battled everywhere else, Bea beat a tricky opponent. Anna and Amanda were battling some good tennis and themselves for a bit but played so well to win being a set down," said Barnett. "I'm so proud of us for going 5-1 and solo second. Â We've accomplished so much this year, everything we've set out to do but one goal. We'll recover and get ready to put it all on the line in the Summit League tournament. One more goal to accomplish! GO Yotes!"
