Coyotes fall twice to St. Thomas

SAINT PAUL, Minn. – St. Thomas recorded a doubleheader sweep over South Dakota in Summit League play on Saturday from South Field.

The Tommies recorded wins of 6-1 and 4-3 and moved even at .500 in league play on the season at 7-7. South Dakota, meanwhile, fell to 4-9 in league play.

ST. THOMAS 6, SOUTH DAKOTA 1
St. Thomas pounded out 13 hits, the most by a Summit League opponent this season against the Coyotes, in registering the win in game one of the doubleheader.

Christina Crawford limited South Dakota to one run on five hits while recording her fourth straight victory in the circle for the Tommies.

Kaitlyn Raymond went 3-for-4 while Avery Wukawitz had a double and home run in the win.

Alecea Mendoza and Gabby Moser had two hits each for South Dakota who plated a run in the fourth as Clara Edwards walked and eventually scored on a sac fly from Autumn Iversen.

ST. THOMAS 4, SOUTH DAKOTA 3
A big defensive error from South Dakota led to a three-run inning for St. Thomas to tie the game in the bottom of the fourth and the hosts plated the eventual winning run in the bottom of the fifth.

The Coyotes stranded nine runners on base, including runners on second and third to end the game in the top of the seventh.

Delaney White and Abi Brown had two hits each while Edwards, Alexia Terrazas and Alivia Conte also contributed hits in the contest. Tatum Villotta who had a single in game one, saw her season-high and team-high 10 game hitting streak end in game two.

South Dakota took a 3-0 lead with two runs in the second and a single run in the fourth. Back-to-back RBI knocks from Brown and Conte made it 2-0 in the second. Iversen scampered home on a wild pitch in the fourth to make it 3-0.

A dropped ball in the infield led to three unearned runs for the Tommies in the fourth and the game winning run came home on an RBI single from Laken Lienhard, plating Raymond who had tripled.

McKenna Young suffered the pitching loss allowing just one earned run on five hits while striking out a career-high nine batters.

The two teams had to wait out a one hour and 30-minute weather delay due to low temperatures at the beginning of the doubleheader. Sunday's third game is scheduled for an 11 a.m. first pitch.
