DES MOINES, Iowa – South Dakota women's tennis suffered a 4-0 setback to #52 Denver on Saturday morning in the Summit League tournament championships match inside Roger Knapp Tennis Center on the campus of Drake University.
Â
The Coyotes, who were making their fourth title match appearance in school history, closed one of the most successful campaigns in the Division I era with a 12-10 record, with the 12 dual wins representing the most under 10
th year head coach
Brett Barnett.
Â
"This wasn't the way we wanted this season to end but we have nothing to be ashamed about," Barnett said. "This result does not take anything away from what we've accomplished.Â
Â
"Congrats to Denver for playing well today and winning the Summit League."
Â
South Dakota couldn't keep the doubles momentum from the regular season going as they dropped the first doubles point to a Summit foe this season.
Â
Denver then capped its 10
th straight tournament title by winning singles matches at No. 1, No. 3 and No. 5.
Â
"We had our chances and especially in the doubles point," said Barnett. "We're up a break late in the set on two courts and couldn't convert some chances to give us a ton of momentum, we fought to the end in singles which we've done all year.Â
Â
"Each player has so much to be proud of for what we've accomplished and what they've done. I'm most sad that I can't coach this team anymore as they mean so much to me."
Â
South Dakota's No. 2 doubles duo of Anna Medyvedyeva and
Grace Chadick set a single season school record with 22 wins while finishing 22-7 and 10-6 during the dual season. In the title match the duo was down 0-2, won four straight games to go up 4-2, before ultimately falling 4-6.
Â
The Coyotes had two individuals record 20 or more singles wins in a season for the first time since 2015-2016.
Â
Chadick, a junior, led the way with a 21-9 record while
Selena Bird, a sophomore, went 20-7. Medvyedyeva had 18 singles wins while
Bea Havlickova had 17 and
Amanda de Oliveira finished with 16.
Â
"This year is going to go down as possibly the best year in program history," added Barnett. "We've set numerous records both individually and as a team that are special. Thank you to the seniors who have given so much to this program."
Â
South Dakota losses the services of seniors
Paige Alter and
Sydney Weinberg but will return seven players for the 2024-2025 school year. All four individuals who earned All-Summit League honors will return led by Havlickova and Medvyedyeva, who were first team selections, as well as Bird and de Oliveira, honorable mention choices.
Â
"The exciting thing is we're so young as a team and return pretty much our whole lineup," added Barnett. "We will reload and come back better than ever next year. Learning experience for this team and we will look to take it one step farther next year. Go Yotes!"
