Coyotes capture seventh Summit League Women’s All-Sports Award

05.22.2024

SIOUX FALLS, S.D.—The University of South Dakota has captured the Dr. Helen Smiley Women's All-Sports Award for the seventh time in the last eight competitions. The Summit League's year-end awards were presented by Commissioner Josh Fenton at the annual Presidents Council and Joint Council meetings.

South Dakota finished runner-up in the Summit League Commissioner's Cup standings. USD tallied 83 points in the final standings behind South Dakota State's 91.5 points. The Coyotes led the way in the women's all-sport standings with 55.5 points.

The Coyotes captured a Summit League title in women's cross country last fall, the sixth in program history. USD also took home a share of the Summit League volleyball regular season title as the season ended in a four-way tie. Four USD women's squads also finished runner-up this season: women's swimming & diving, women's indoor track & field, women's outdoor track & field and women's tennis.

Track & field led the way on the men's side. South Dakota captured the men's indoor title and finished runner-up outdoors.

South Dakota captured its first Dr. Helen Smiley award in 2016 and has gone on to win seven of the last eight. The Coyotes won the Summit League Commissioner's Cup in 2018-19 and were leading the standings in 2019-20 before the cancellation of the spring seasons due to COVID-19.

The Commissioner's Cup is presented annually to the member institution that collects the most combined points in relationship to placement in league-sponsored sports between its men's and women's athletic programs, while the All-Sports Awards are given to the institutions that accumulate the most points in the men's sports and women's sports. The men's award is named for former Valparaiso Director of Athletics Dr. William Steinbrecher, who guided the Crusaders from 1979-04, while the women's award is named for former Western Illinois Director of Athletics Dr. Helen Smiley, who headed WIU's athletic program from 1994-01.
