VERMILLION, S.D. – The Coyotes jumped out to the early lead and didn't look back, securing their first win of the season in 5-0 fashion over Morningside Sunday afternoon at First Bank & Trust Soccer Complex in Vermillion.
Ashby Johnston, the Coyotes' leading scorer from a season ago, had a hand in the first and last goals of the game for South Dakota. Johnston assisted
Kyla Brown, who scored her first goal of the season in the 9
th minute, on the opening goal while scoring her own on a pass from
Brooklyn Bordson in the 56
th minute.
The Coyotes totaled three goals in the opening half, starting with Brown's goal early.
Brooke Nelson scored in the 30
th minute on a pass from
Morgan Sullivan and
Anna Hendrickson added a goal in the 43
rd minute. Both Nelson and Hendrickson scored their first goals in Coyote uniforms Sunday.
Janaina Zanin and Johnston added second half goals just 82 seconds apart.
In total, the Coyotes had 25 shots, 15 of which were on goal. Johnston had five shots, putting three on goal to lead the team in shots on target. In goal,
Margot Mulhern pitched a shutout, playing the opening half without allowing a goal as her defense didn't allow a shot on goal. In the second half,
Cambell Fischer and
Kelsie Luquin split time. Fischer faced the lone shot on goal for the Mustangs, recording the stop.
The Coyotes complete their first week of the season with a 1-0-1 record, and get some extra rest before hosting Eastern Washington Sunday, Aug. 25 at First Bank & Trust Soccer Complex.
