PREVIEW: Coyotes stay home for match with Eagles

08.21.2024

VERMILLION, S.D. – Following a strong opening week, the Coyotes gear up for a tough test at home Sunday with Eastern Washington.

South Dakota women's soccer started the season out on the right foot last week, scoring six goals over the course of two matches, leading to a 1-0-1 record. The Coyotes opened the season with a 1-1 draw at Northern Iowa and made their home debut against Morningside, cruising to a 5-0 win.

"It was a successful first couple tests for the women," head coach Michael Thomas shared. "We are excited to see the growth of the team and are getting ready for a tough test against Eastern Washington."

The Coyotes shift their attention to a single match this week, hosting Eastern Washington Sunday at 1 p.m. at First Bank & Trust Soccer Complex.

THE COYOTES
Izzy Quintavalle (Jr., Otsego, Minn.) scored the first goal of the Coyote season, getting USD on the board in the first half against Northern Iowa Thursday.

The Coyotes home opening victory over Morningside is the first victory in a home opener since 2021. Five different Coyotes scored in the match as USD got its first win of the 2024 season.

THE OPPONENT
Eastern Washington is playing its third consecutive road game to the start the 2024 season and has a 1-1-0 record through the first week of the year.

The Eagles lost the opener at Troy Thursday and defeated Kennesaw State, 3-2, Sunday. Riley Arribas is off to a strong start for Eastern Washington, recording a goal and an assist in two matches.

SERIES HISTORY
The Coyotes and Eagles have met six times prior to Sunday but haven't played since 2019. Eastern Washington holds the series lead on the Coyotes with four wins in six tries. USD's lone victory came in 2010 in 2-1 fashion at home.

The last three contests have been decided by a goal or less, as the Eagles picked up 1-0 and 2-1 (2OT) wins in 2017 and 2019 with the 2018 match ending in a 1-1 draw.
