VERMILLION, S.D. — South Dakota women's basketball managed to best South Dakota State in the second and fourth quarters, but hot starts to both halves for the Jackrabbits gave SDSU a 77-59 victory inside the Sanford Coyote Sports Center Saturday afternoon.
Â
The Jackrabbits jumped out to a 27-10 lead on 50% (10-20) shooting in the first quarter.
Grace Larkins, who finished with 27 points, eight assists, and seven rebounds, scored the first six USD points in the game, but the Coyotes shot 4-of-14 in the quarter, including 0-of-6 from beyond the arc.
Â
Much like the first quarter, the Jacks, who led by 11 at the half, started out hot in the third quarter, building a 27-point advantage with less than three minutes to go, the Coyotes settled the run in the final moments of the quarter to cut the lead back down to 21 after three.
Â
The Coyotes caught fire in the second quarter, including a 9-0 run to start the quarter, to get the Jackrabbit lead to single digits. SDSU recovered to stretch the lead back to 14 before a Larkins' three-pointer as time expired made the score 44-33 after two quarters.
Â
The fourth quarter looked a lot like the second for South Dakota, outscoring the Jackrabbits 15-12. The comeback wasn't in the card Saturday as the SDSU lead was too large to overcome.
Â
Outside of Larkins' 27-8-7 stat line,
Carley Duffney added 17 points, her third straight game in double figures. As the conference leaders in fewest fouls and turnovers per game, South Dakota managed to stay under their season average in both categories, totaling 10 fouls and 10 turnovers.
Â
The Coyotes hit the road Thursday to take on Kansas City, and return home Saturday for their first rematch of conference play when they take on North Dakota inside the SCSC.
