ST. LOUIS, Mo. — For the third time this season, a South Dakota Coyote has been named a Missouri Valley Football Conference (MVFC) Player of the Week honor. Senior kicker
Will Leyland has been named the Special Teams Player of the Week, the conference office announced Monday afternoon.
Leyland's efforts helped lift USD past Indiana State on their Homecoming weekend and marks the first road win of the season for the Coyotes. The Coyotes also pick up their first winning record of the campaign and improve to 2-1 in MVFC play.
Saturday afternoon in Terre Haute, Indiana was prime time to shine for the senior place kicker from Pennsylvania. Leyland connected on all four field goals in the 19-14 victory of the Sycamores. The four made field goals tied the South Dakota single-game record. His longest field goal of the day was 42 yards, as he also hit one from 23, 26, and 32 yards. The 42-yarder was his second make from 40+ yards this season.
In program history, it becomes the sixth time a Coyote kicker has made four field goals in a game. The last time it was done was Oct. 15, 2016, when Miles Bergner also made four at Indiana State.
On the day, Leyland put 13 of the team's 19 points officially on the board, which included a PAT. He's now also made 120-straight PATs.
On the season, the Souderton, Pa. native is 8-for-10 in field goals with a long of 44 yards. He's a perfect 3-for-3 on field goals between 20-29 yards and 30-39 yards.
Leyland is the third Coyote to earn weekly honors from the MVFC, joining
L.J. Phillips Jr. and
Brock Woolf both back on September 15.
